# Import

> Bring existing notes into a vault using the picker or drag and drop.

Use Import when your source is already Markdown. You need Editor or Vault admin
access to the destination vault. Imports do not use source-conversion credits.

## Import from your computer

1. Open **Knowledge** and select the destination vault.
2. Choose **+ File → Import** for files or **+ Folder → Import** for a folder
tree. You can also drop files or folders onto the Knowledge tree.
3. Select the destination folder and inspect the import result.
4. Open several imported pages to check their text and relative links.

An import recreates nested folders. A folder that matches an existing sibling
folder is merged into that folder; colliding files are automatically renamed
rather than overwriting the existing file.

## What is accepted

Markdown files must have a `.md` extension, valid UTF-8 content, portable names,
and bodies within the per-file size limit. A single import is limited to **500
planned files and folders combined**. Split a larger collection into batches.

Non-Markdown files, invalid names, oversized files, and invalid text are
skipped. Review the results instead of assuming everything in a dropped folder
was accepted. Ordinary Markdown bodies retain their exact UTF-8 content through
import.

## Migrate an existing collection

If you want the wiki template, apply it to the empty destination before
importing. Then import your material into the appropriate folder, such as
`inbox/` for items that need review or `sources/` for source material.

Relative links may need repair if colliding filenames were renamed. Attachments
and files outside the imported tree do not come along automatically. Open linked
pages and check for unresolved wikilinks.

For PDFs, office files, public URLs, or photos, use
[Convert](/knowledge/convert). For local editing after import,
[pair a machine](/connections/local-sync) into a dedicated local root; do not
enroll directly over your existing notes folder.
