# Version history

> Read the paper trail, compare an earlier page, and make it current again.

Every accepted file change creates an attributed revision. Restoration creates
another revision, so earlier history remains available.

## Inspect an earlier version

1. Open a page in **Knowledge**.
2. Select **Activity** in the document sidebar.
3. Open a paper-trail entry to compare it with the live version.
4. Inspect added and removed lines before choosing an action.

The paper trail identifies the actor, time, and source of changes. Folder moves
can appear as inherited movement without claiming that the file body was edited.

## Choose what to do

| Action                | Result                                                                             |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Keep live**         | Leave the live page in place and close an ordinary history comparison.             |
| **Copy into my edit** | Put the earlier content into your working edit so you can revise it before saving. |
| **Use this version**  | Make the selected historical content current by writing a new revision.            |
| **Return to live**    | Discard the working historical copy and return to the saved current page.          |

Changing live content requires Editor or Vault admin access. Copying into an
edit does not change the saved page until you save. If you have unsaved work,
read the discard confirmation before replacing it.

## History is different from a conflict

An older revision is a past accepted version. A conflict is a competing change
that could not become current. In a conflict comparison, **Keep live** resolves
the conflict and creates a resolution revision. See

## Recover deleted content

Deletion retains historical content, but the current tree does not provide a
general Trash screen. If the deleted item is no longer reachable, contact
support for the recovery path. Restoration can fail if the old name is now
occupied or the parent has been deleted. Avoid creating a replacement at the
same path while recovering the original.
